Allen breaks his work down into seven chapters, devoting each to an important aspect of the global predicament. Securing the food supply, saving forests, preserving wildlife and presenting a strategy for conservation are all discussed as methods to improve the relationship between mankind and nature. The author highlights how production and consumption methods of 1980 were grossly inadequate and far from sustainable. Projected figures revealed a rise in pesticide use, a rise in global consumption and a decrease in fertile land. "If current rates of land degradation continue," writes Allen, "close to one third of all the world's arable land…will be destroyed in the next twenty years." Allen's book is based on the World Conservation Strategy prepared for by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural resources for the United Nations Environment Program and the World Wildlife Fund and speaks directly to Canadians by pointing to priorities for action in this country. As the discussion of global warming and climate change has developed into a full-scale battle in the twenty first century, Allen's work remains relevant, calling for individuals and government to form a better relationship with their land and resources. Reducing consumption, conserving energy, preventing the destruction of forests and preserving the delicate balance between humans, animals and nature is an important aspect of Allen's book and remains at the heart of the battle for a sustainable future.
